Welcome to Vista Heights Middle School! We are excited that you will be attending our school for the 2017-18 school year.

Vista Heights is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. The IB MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation. As part of the program, students will be taking classes from eight different curricular areas.

Courses

Vista Heights will be offering courses based on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program curricular model.

Core Classes

All students will be placed in the following four core classes: Language and Literature (Language Arts), Individuals and Societies (Social Studies), Mathematics, and Sciences. We’ll make sure that students are placed in classes that are appropriately leveled and right for them.

Physical and Health Education

All students will be placed in a survey PE class, where they will participate in a variety of sports. Alternatively, students may choose to be in a year-long Dance PE class. There are beginning and advanced options. Space is limited, though, so we cannot guarantee placement in Dance PE.

Language Acquisition

All students will be placed in a class focused on learning a world language. Learning to communicate in a variety of ways allows students to develop global connections and international-mindedness.

Sixth grade students will be given introductory courses in Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese. These classes will allow students to experience learning a new language and will help them decide on future language pathways. Students who are native Spanish speakers will be given the opportunity to improve fluency in Spanish, particularly in the areas of reading and writing.

We currently offer seventh and eighth grade students classes in Spanish for both native and non-native speakers. Some of the classes we offer are equivalent to high school courses and will allow students to earn high school credit, with the provision that students still take two years of world language courses at the high school level (either continuing on to advanced classes in Spanish, or taking two courses in a different language). In future years, seventh and eighth grade students will be offered classes in French and Mandarin Chinese.

Design and Arts

All students will take Design and Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) classes. Students may choose a year-long Design or VAPA class (for example: advanced art, band, choir, drama, STEAM, AVID, ASB, digital photography). Alternatively, students will be placed in available semester long classes (for example: computers, multicultural studies, intermediate art). Some classes may require an audition, and space is limited, so we cannot guarantee that students will get placed in any particular class.

Mission

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The IB Learner Profile

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them. Each of the IB's programs is committed to the development of students according to the IB learner profile.

The profile aims to develop learners who are:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Vista Heights Middle School is a candidate school* for the Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Vista Heights Middle School believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
